"To go on pilrgimage is not simply to visit a place to admire its treasures of nature, art or history. To go on pilgrimage really means to step out of ourselves in order to encounter God where he has revealed himself, where his grace has shone with particular splendour and produced rich fruits of conversion and holiness among those who believe." ~Pope Benedict XVI, 6 Novebmer 2010
Pilgrimages are ways that the faithful encounter God by visiting sites associated with Him and/or the saints who dedicated their lives to Him. The metaphor for the entire Christian life is a pilgrimage, since in our life we travel each day towards our destination of heaven. Sometimes we get lost, but Christ always invites us back to the Way which He Himself is. Sometimes the road of life is difficult; other times it is easy. But the point is that we keep trying to reach our destination. And if we do reach that destination, there is great joy at arriving at the place for which we sought when we set out at the beginning of our life of faith in baptism.
